The Color of Heaven is Green

It's that blissful 15 minutes every season where I have NOTHING TO DO in the garden (except water and weed, natch).  Things are growing and blooming and after all the delayed gratification of spring toil, it's pure pleasure to sit outside in sunshine and bask in, well, the green-ness of everything.  We're already eating lettuce and greens, and berries and baby squash are almost ready.

First caterpillar - found him just hanging out on my fennel!
10 days later - voila!  First Black Swallowtail of 2011.

Off to the garden he goes.

The first boysenberry!!!!!

The herbs are filling in nicely in the birdbath.  Still no idea what the top plant is...

Lettuce, chard, and collards

Planting day in April, was it?

Tomato heaven today.  And check out that massive brussel sprout!
The leaky fountain is now a full-on herb garden.

Baby summer squash

Sungold cherry tomatoes are right around the corner.

Carrots finally sprouted after two planting attempts.

Beans, peas, squash, corn, and tomatillos are all going gangbusters.
The pepper patch (with artichokes in the back).

Sticks and String

Ah, knitting...  Remember when this blog was going to be all about how I sped through those 17 UFO's (unfinished objects) that I began 2010 with?  My readers already know that I have knitted and crocheted and sewed up a storm in the last 16 months; I just suck at posting the results.  And I keep starting new things, for gifts or class models or sometimes just because I want to!  So here are a few more FO's.  One of these days I might even get them onto the Works In Progress page...

Head Above Water

Whew! Spring sprung a while ago, but I finally feel like I have a handle on it.  The rain and cold are gone, the garden is in, the taxes are done, softball's over, the house is quasi-clean, the chronic paperwork pile is (at least) not growing, we had an awesome Spring Break, and the kids are back in school.  Here are some early garden photos - first stuff from last year.
Blackberry vine from last year!
Raspberry vine from last year :-(

Grapefruit tree I moved into a pot - it's thriving now.
The alyssum and creeping geraniums have really spread.

The Sweet William in the playhouse beds really filled in.
Trying the strawberries in a partial shade since they didn't do well last year.

Now some new things, or faves I replanted.

Greens bed - lettuces, collards, spinach and swiss chard.

Woolypockets filled with edamame seedlings!

Cucumbers, alyssum, and herbs.

Lettuce, polka dot plant, basil, and herbs.

These started as hydroponic lettuces, but weren't doing well so in the dirt they went.

Brussel sprouts - my new fave veggie!

The pepper patch - bells, anaheim, jalapeno.

Bean and pea teepees with zucchini and yellow squash in the middle.
Notice my CORN FIELD in the background??

Petunias and sweet potato vine in the playhouse window boxes.

The tomato plants - scientifically engineered like Monica's!

And the piece de resistance - the "herby bird bath" that I built to fill
the gaping hole a broken top branch left in my pink daisy shrub.

Next I'll post some knitting updates and pix from our very first family camping trip!

Winner!!!

Congratulations to Heidi (OneOfTheHive), our contest winner!  Heidi wins the full pattern-chocked Spring issue of our new fave online knitting mag, Knitcircus. My apologies to all in the posting delay.  Between school, softball, astronomy club, homework, religious school, sleepovers, literature projects (and all that's just the kids!), knitting classes, family visits, grocery shopping, working out, paying bills, getting the taxes ready, quick trip to Vegas, and listening to the audiobook "The Host" during every single second of my SPARE time, I haven't known which way was up this month!  But I can't wait to start a project from Knitcircus.
A heartfelt thanks for the 14 comments left on the blog - such riches!  FYI, the contest winner was determined by a random number generator at random.org.

Knitcircus - Click & Win

Remember how I promised to make this blog about ACTUAL KNITTING this year? So I've browsed a few online/electronic knitting magazines lately, but my age shows when I get frustrated with the clicking and the clicking and more clicking.  I like reading books and mags on paper, all curled up in my corner of the couch; plus owning a brick and mortar yarn shop sort of conditioned me away from buying online.  When you have rent and overhead, you tend to resent the virtual world - they seem to have it so easy!

But  I'm trying to change my fuddy-duddy ways, so I checked out Knitcircus - the title grabbed me right away.  Originally a glossy print publication, it went digital a year ago and the designs are so great and the format is so ingenious that I even subscribed!  Anyone can browse the magazine online to see the gorgeous project photos (and zoom on the details), read the articles, and see the ads.  But to get the actual pattern instructions, you either subscribe or buy them each separately.  Subscribing is quite affordable - each issue ends up costing around the same as just a pattern or two.  And there's even a recipe in each issue!

Check it out here: Knitcircus.  Sweetheart editor Jaala Spiro won me over the digital mag world, and now she is letting me give away a Spring 2011 Pattern Collection to one of my lucky readers!  (Considering your chance is about 1 in 2.5, give it a try.  Seriously.)  Just click on over and browse Knitcircus, then post a comment here on what you thought of it.  A lucky winner will be chosen by a randon number generator at midnight on February 10.   Good luck, and I can't wait to see what you think!

2010 - The Results

First, I'd like to thank the Academy, I mean my 3.5 readers for keeping me accountable!  The real purpose of the "Big 10 in 2010" list was first and foremost to actually remember the list.  For the whole year.  (Usually I'm lucky to find yesterday's post-it note.)  I admit I initially stacked the deck a bit by including things I really wanted to do, like the garden and the den, but even those had issues when viewed over the entire year.  Overall, I feel pretty good and am working on the new list for 2011.

Plant Vegetable and Herb Garden from Seed
Definitely a success on this one... until about October.  It turned out that I sort of ignored it (along with the compost pile) once it stopped giving me lovely vegetables.  But we had tomatoes, peppers, okra, lettuce, peas, pole beans, carrots,  zucchini, tomatillos, raspberries, basil, oregano, chives, scallions, and enough mint to make juleps for the entire South.  Now, admittedly, not every veggie on this list was what I would call productive; a few just made a small showing.  And thank goodness for my friend Monica's tomato FOREST.  She kept me in the red, yellow, striped, and cherry beauties all summer.  Probably the biggest benefit of the garden was clearing out the old shrubs and converting it to what I like to call our "urban farm" of edible landscaping.  P.S. I also am involved in starting a school garden at my kids' school.  Oh yeah, I actually got fruit from my new citrus trees - three oranges, two grapefruit, and lots of lemons!  After 15 years, I feel like a real Californian.

Daily Yoga, Pilates, or Walking
I started regularly walking our local park in March, and thought I was doing well with 3 laps.  I also did my Malibu Pilates dvd once or twice a week and yoga now and again.  In June, I planned a trip home to NY, Ohio & Indiana so started watching my eating to try and lose 15 pounds by September.  With this plan, I actually lost a whopping FOUR pounds in three months, so something had to change!  Then three huge things happened.  1) I bought a digital scale, and found out our old one was TEN POUNDS LOW so that 15 was really 25.  2) Saw my oldest friend Sandy, who had lost a zillion pounds and looked 10 years younger by using the Fat Flush Plan.  3) Bought a pedometer and a heart rate monitor, only to discover my heretofore mentioned workout wasn't aerobic enough for my grandma.  So now I walk about 15-20 miles a week, work out in some way every day, and after 14 weeks on the Fat Flush Plan, have lost another 14 pounds!  It has changed my outlook, my health, and my body shape.  My amazing hubby has lost over 20 pounds!

Monthly Date Night with DH
Okay, this one sucks; I think we managed three nights out last year that didn't involve family, school activities, holidays, or other friends/couples.  It will definitely be going on the 2011 list.

Finish 18 Knit, Crochet, and Sewing WIP's
Hahahahahahaha.   The actual funny part is that I thought this would be a piece of cake!  See my post entitled "Knitter's Math".  Enough said.  My knitting goal for this year will be structured very differently, as you will see.  I also was handicapped a bit on this goal since I was often knitting new projects for classes I was teaching.  Even if I already had a class model, it rarely was in the right yarn for the right shop.

Frame and Hang Fam Fotos on Hallway Wall
Nada.  But I did semi-organize my giant messy shelf of pictures and albums.  (Okay, I put everything from the last two years in a box.)  Definitely will be on the 2011 list.

Repair/Clean Grandma's Lace Tablecloth
Nope.  Truthfully, I am very nervous about this one.  I can't decide if I should try to clean or repair it first.  The smoke smell is overpowering and the yucky brown color very unmotivating.  But I really want to save this priceless heirloom, so it will be on the new list.

Use My 96 Cookbooks in 1 Year
This lasted all of ONE month.  I did actually use more cookbooks, and now am more aware of what I actually have, which is good.  I also bought about 8 new (and mostly unhealthy) cookbooks this year, which is bad.  Now I only cook from the Fat Flush book, and Clean Eating magazine.  Check it out - it's awesome!  Anybody need any cookbooks?

One-on-One Kid Time
Pretty good on this one; it helped that my youngest had more social stuff going on this year, which gave MD some Mama Time.  But I do miss my time with the oldest now that she is back to work.  But yeah for her!

Make Challah for Shabbat
Yeah on this one!  Not only did I create a recipe we all love that gets mixed in the bread machine then baked in the oven, but I won First Prize in the "Other Breads" division at the county fair this summer!  I'm actually looking into selling it at the farmer's market.  This involves getting my kitchen certified which initimidates me, so no progress yet.

Transform My Half of Den into Craft Room
This was fun and I love seeing my yarn and books all organized instead of all over the place in boxes.  As is typical, it turned into a whole den reorganization, but now my hubby also has half of the den and actually uses his desk!  Now I'm ready to inventory what I actually have and get it on Ravelry to keep me accountable for one of the new 2011 goals.
